Here's what it means for BayPass at SJSU
SJSU approved a new $184.50 per semester Instructionally Related Activities (IRA) fee to fund multiple student support programs and initiatives. This includes BayPass - unlimited BART, Caltrain, bus, and ferry access across the Bay Area.
BayPass will be available to all SJSU students starting August 15, 2026. This is what the campaign was pushing for: region-wide transit access as a real campus benefit, not just a good idea stuck in a meeting agenda.

What Happens Next
BayPass begins August 15, 2026. Before you can ride, complete these steps to connect BayPass to your Clipper card.
Get a 19-Digit Clipper Card
You’ll need a 19-digit physical or mobile Clipper card to activate BayPass.
Tip: If you already have a Clipper card in your mobile wallet, chances are it’s 19 digits.
Get a Clipper cardApply for BayPass
Submit the Transportation Solutions application with your Clipper card number. BayPass is available to enrolled full- and part-time SJSU students who have been charged the mandatory enrollment fees.
BayPass is not available to faculty, staff, or Open University students. Students exempt from the mandatory enrollment fees, including Special Session students, are also not eligible.
Apply for BayPassWait for Activation, Then Ride
Transportation Solutions asks students to allow up to two business days to approve the application and activate BayPass. Once active, use it just like a regular Clipper card on participating transit services.
BayPass begins August 15, 2026 and renews automatically each semester when you are enrolled.
Already have SmartPass?
All previously assigned VTA SmartPasses deactivate on September 1. SmartPasses are 10 digits and cannot be used for BayPass.
